Phlebitis Symptoms

Phlebitis is a condition that causes inflammation of one or several veins. The condition can occur in deep veins (also known as deep vein thrombophlebitis) or in surface veins (known as superficial phlebitis). Phlebitis usually affects the larger veins in legs, but can also occur in the arms as well.

Phlebitis can have many symptoms, so it is important to know the warning signs. A red, tender area may slowly develop along the affected vein. Inflammation that follows the vein may be present as well. The area may also feel warm and tender to the touch. The vein and surrounding area may also feel hard and may be swollen and itchy. The vein my start to throb or burn, especially when touched. These phlebitis symptoms may appear to be worse first thing in the morning, or when the leg is lowered after periods of elevation. Infection may also occur and can be recognized by a low-grade fever, redness, pain, swelling and breaking down of the skin around the affected vein.

Deep vein thrombophlebitis can present similar symptoms as superficial phlebitis, but can be a very serious condition. If there are any signs of swelling, inflammation of the veins in the arms, lumps in the legs or high fever along with any of the other symptoms, it is important to see a medical professional right away.

Call your healthcare provider if you or a loved one has signs and symptoms of swelling, pain, and inflamed superficial veins on the arms or legs in conjunction with high fever, chest pain or shortness of breath. These can be signs that a blood clot has traveled from the vein to the lung.

Superficial phlebitis is rarely serious and is usually responds well to pain medications. However, there are rare instances where the condition can become more serious. For this reason, it is always a good idea to see your healthcare provider during the onset of symptoms to rule out a more serious condition.
